Biography of Black Kukrudu

The group was formed by Emmanuel Amponsah Nartey in 1975 at Omankorpe, a village near Accra in Ghana. They were called Wasewahey in those days. Some members of the group including the leader immigrated to Canada in the early 1990’s and re-established the group in Calgary, Alberta and renamed it BLACK KUKRUDU.
In  2004 the group relocated to Ontario, Canada.
Black symbolizes who they are as a people and Kukrudu stands for earthquake. Their unique style of performance coupled with the power of their vocals makes it difficult if not impossible for one to sit or stand without moving to their shaking powerful African rhythms.Their performance include acappella, band, drumming and dance. The group has performed in various African, American and Canadian cities. Black Kukrudu combines traditional African rhythms with that of North America in their songs. This produces an insatiable appetite for their gorgeously harmonized acappella songs and astonishingly athletic display of dance.

Their music is fresh and surprising not only for the interesting texts and lyrics but also for the typically intricate rhythms and harmonies sprinkled with clicking, clapping and shouting complimented by breakaway dance moves that include leaping and odd high kick. Their unstoppable energy produces an atmosphere charged with electricity and fun.
